I am the founder of Mums With Bubs Fitness and creator of the New Mama Lifestyle. As a new mum, living across the world from my family, I felt the full effects of ante-natal and post-natal depression.

My daughter was a very unsettled baby, and I struggled to connect with her. The one thing that had kept me balanced prior to children, was exercise, and it felt a million miles away.

I had absolutely no one to watch her, and in the classes that I did end up getting to, she just cried and I had to abandon any prospect of getting anything done for myself.

One day I’d had enough, and I decided to use my extensive knowledge in exercise and movement and I started working out in the lounge room with her in my arms, in the baby carrier, and on the mat with me.

She loved it! Slowly but surely, I regained my strength, and she began to smile more, cry less, and sleep more too.

It truly felt like a miracle I had to share with as many mothers that would listen.

I launched the Mums With Bubs Fitness classes when my daughter was 6 months old, and since that day, I’ve coached thousands of mothers in regaining their health while connecting with their babies.

We all know the physical health benefits of regular exercise, but I think what isn’t spoken about most is one of the biggest gains you can have by working out a couple of times a week.

Your mental health.

Exercise melts away feelings of stress, depression, (including post-natal depression), and anxiety. When you start moving, your body increases the production of endorphins which are known for their positive feeling vibes and reducing your perception of pain.

Not only that, when you make exercise consistent in your life, your brain actually changes the areas that stress and anxiety are produced, as well as brain sensitivity for the serotonin and norepinephrine which relieve feelings of depression.

Your body gives you no choice but to look at, and live life more positively. And this doesn’t just happen for adults, if you get your kids involved, their little bodies show the same changes, meaning your kids grow up with a positive, problem solving mental baseline.

I know your busy, which is why I have restricted these workouts to 30 minutes each, which gives you enough time to get your sweat on and feel the mental results almost immediately, without having to give up a huge chunk of your day.

If you’re sick of looking pregnant – when you’re not – stay consistent with your workouts, and you’ll strengthen your pelvic floor, and abdominal muscles, and start seeing physical results in 4 – 6 weeks.

 

10 MINUTE HIIT WORKOUTS

 

 

HIIT are for those ready to take their workouts to the next level. If you’ve strengthened your pelvic floor and core after birth, then it’s time to take the intensity up a notch. HIIT, or High-Intensity Interval Training is the most effective and efficient way to get the body that you want, and one of the fastest growing preferred method of losing weight, across the country.

If your goals are to lean out, build muscle fast, increase your cardiovascular health and not spend loads of time needed to exercise, then the bottom line is that doing a brief but intense, intermittent bouts of exercise is the way to go. The benefits of high-intensity interval training — HIIT, what it’s commonly referred to — are a greater strength, improved speed and better fat burning, all in ways that steady-state cardio workouts simply can’t comparably create.

HIIT helps you reach your fitness targets faster than you ever thought possible. Science backs this up. A study found that people who started HIIT reported much greater enjoyment during their workouts than the standard continuous exercise methods. This means you’ll be more likely to stick to the plan and smash your goals.

But be warned, HIIT workouts are more exhaustive than steady state endurance workouts like the 30 minutes workouts I’ve also provided. Therefore, a longer recovery period is often needed. If you are a beginner to fitness and jump straight into HIIT, you’ll increase the chance of injury and muscle soreness, so start with the 30-minute full body workouts, and then graduate up.

 

EXPERIENCE THE AFTERBURN EFFECT THROUGH HIIT

 

 

HIIT workouts come with a very special feature that you won’t find in any other workout. It’s called The Afterburn Effect. Research has shown that The Afterburn Effect climaxes in the first hour following exercise and declines thereafter, lasting anywhere between 10 to 72 hours depending on your intensity and duration of your workout.

How this happens is simple, after you work out, your body must perform a variety of tasks to recover and return to a resting state. These tasks include replenishing oxygen, ATP (adenosine triphosphate – helps with energy transfer), and creatine (facilitate recycling of ATP) stores. Your body must also remove the lactic acid, repair the muscles, and so much more.

These processes require oxygen, so oxygen consumption rises after exercise, and cost energy, so additional calories are burned above the resting rate which creates The Afterburn Effect. By completing just 2 – 3 HIIT workouts per week, you can rest assured that you won’t be overtraining or negatively impacting your body, but still be getting the serious results you’re after.

While some workout videos show the movements for a woman during pregnancy, this program is not specifically designed for pregnant women. If you have just had a baby, please get the clearence from your doctor before undertaking any physical exercise, and to be safe, a visit to a physio for a women’s health check would be ideal to know the state of your pelvic floor and where you’re starting from. If you feel that you need specific help in repairing your pelvic floor and bringing your abdominals together, then the New Mama Mojo program is where I would recommend starting.
